throughout this allegory the narrator follows himself around through the lost bars and ghettos and along endless streets finding and losing friends and lovers and always ending up with a bottle in his hand as the narrator vies for solace he is somehow unable to avoid the ever reappearing john fate a personification of his inevitabilities while slowly destroying himself the narrator fantasizes through an elaborate monologue of his strange slants and hard times from which there is much to gather about who we are and how we survive together at all
